a new game — kommando

A new project is in work since… a long time to be honest. The idea is really old and boring: a Commando ‘86 clone. In case you don’t know that gem, it’s an old C64 classic.

Somewhere in March of this year I’ve actually started to work on that piece. And it has gone through a lot of changes. Currently I’m at iteration number four, I think. So it’s really time to start documenting.

In this first post I’d like to share how this game was conceived, the evolution of the idea that is. As said it started with the idea of a Commando ‘86 clone. I soon realised that this idea is a bit boring and forgot about it. Then came Vampire Survivors and I immediately knew, that I want to throw the idea of an auto-shooting, somehow evolving character into the mix.

The next, also immediate realisation was, that I suck at graphics. As if I hadn’t known that! But I was so intrigued by the idea of a survival game that I did not let that hinder me. Instead I started to create my new game with placeholders. Those placeholders were simple white squares and nothing else.

While working with those white on black squares it suddenly clicked: Why not let this be the prevalent art style? Black and white pixel art for the win!
